Solids

In the last few days, Jules has gone from being happy with six feeds a day and eating every three hours, to wanting to eat after 1 or 2 hours and having eight feeds in the day. We've been told this is a sign that he needs more nourishment, and it's time to start him on solids.

I had been planning to wait until six months, but it seems that is not to be! Anytime between four and six months is considered fine, so we are starting now.

The first food we tried was mashed kumara (sweet potato) mixed with breast milk. Most of it ended up on the bib and the washcloth. He was very suspicious of the food, and was not very excited about the taste or the texture. I think it will just take some time for him to get used to the spoon, the texture and the idea of swallowing a 'slurry' rather than a liquid.

It was a fun time trying, though, and we are sure he will come to enjoy his food once he indeed realises that it is food!
